Jing was a screencastingcomputer program launched in 2007 as Jing Project by the TechSmith Corporation.^[2]^[3] The software took a picture or video of the user's computer screen and uploaded it to the Web, FTP, computer or clipboard.^[4] If uploaded to the web, the program automatically created a URL to the content so it could be shared with others.^[5]

On 6 January 2009, TechSmith released Jing Pro, a paid premium version of Jing.^[6]

In February 2012, Techsmith announced Jing Pro is to be retired. All users (regardless of subscription) could use this service until 28 February 2013.^[7]

On 14 July 2020, Techsmith shut down the support for uploading to Screencast.com in line with the previously-announced end of support for Jing.^[8] TechSmith also changed the Jing product page^[9] to point to a new product named TechSmith Capture that performs a similar function.

The Jing menu is automatically placed in the top right corner of your desktop, and once you press the Capture button, you can select the area of the screen you want to work with.

Jing enables you to make a freehand selection, rely on the predefined layouts (press the Shift or Control keys to make the presets visible), or choose to work with a particular window.

The next step is to decide if you want to capture an image or record a video. In the latter case, Jing can also capture audio content: you can decide between the built-in input or microphone, or mute the audio devices altogether.

As far as image files are concerned, Jing comes with a simple annotations editor that enables you to add text, draw simple objects, or highlight certain areas.

On the other hand, the video recordings can only be previewed before deciding if you want to save the file locally or upload it to screencast.com.

Since Jing integrates with the service, the transfer is handled with the press of a button, and the direct link to the file is automatically placed on the clipboard. For your convenience, Jing keeps a log with your files that you can review in the History panel.
